Design Visualisation FNBE0155

Introduction

In Design Visualization students are taught trips that engage in the issues of communicating ideas visually. The module teaches students to be well familiar with the use of standard abbreviations, symbols and drawing conventions. A sense of appreciation in terms of recording the design process will be inculcated within the students as variety of recording techniques; graphic annotations; investigative observation; and personal expression are taught.

Project One A: Sketch! Like Your Life Depend on it!

We are required to produce 8 different A5 sketches to practice the different forms of sketching and rendering. We were assigned to sketch; I.Body parts/figures/nature using charcoal on white drawing paper. II.Object projection using charcoal on white drawing paper. III.Detail using pencils on white drawing paper. IV.Geometric projection using Artline on white drawing paper. V.Trace a picture (rendering) of a building using Artline on tracing paper by freehand. VI.One point perspective of an area in Taylor's University using Artline on white drawing paper. VII.Two point perspective of an area in Taylor's University using Artline on white drawing paper. VIII.Artistic representation of a famous building using mix media or just one type.

Reflection

The learning outcomes intended for this assignment were to recognize the potential for creativity, self-expression and visual awareness as well as to identify the fundamental principles, elements and techniques in sketching, drawing, design process and presentation skills. The objectives of this project are to identify a personal and expressive response to visual stimulation and to apply basic principles and elements of design and drawing as a language to visualize and to communicate ideas.

On the completion of this project, my sketching and rendering techniques improved noticeably. Sketching also helped me to visualize ideas and put them down on paper anywhere, anytime. The point perspective drawings helped me to further visualize spaces and the elements. All the intended learning outcomes and objectives were achieved.

Project One B: Developing Architecture Drawings.

Project one B. In this project we were required to produce proper ''hand drawn'' orthographic drawings using the correct drawing conventions and representations, of a space that was given to us, which was the Lift Lobby Block E Level 1. We were to measure the site and produce the following drawings; I.Introductory page. II.One plan of the site. III.Two Elevation of the site. IV.One Section of the site. V.One Detail drawing of the site. VI.Front, back, side and top view of the miniature toy to 1:1 scale. VII.One Axonometric drawing of the site. VIII.Bubble diagrams and a diagrammatic analysis of the site.

Reflection

The learning outcomes proposed for this project were such to allow us to identify the fundamental principles, elements and drawing as a language to visualize and to communicate ideas and to demonstrate observation skills and able to report, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues through visual communications effectively. Besides that, it also allowed us to manipulate a variety of media and techniques to visualize ideas leading to a finished product and to apply drawing as a means of communication in order to express two dimensional and three dimensional ideas.

After completing this assignment, I was able to apply the basic elements and principles of design as well as to use drawing as a language to visualise and communicate ideas. This assignment helped me to become more observant and detailed when recording measurements.

Final Project Part A: Introduction to Site Analysis.

With the site given in Project One B, we were required to produce a site analysis on a maximum of 15 A3 papers as a group. The site analysis contained; I.Location: Location Plan of the site within Taylor's University and a Site Plan of the site (30 meter Radius). II.Site Context: Site Elevations and/or Site Section of the site and its surroundings. III.Size, Zoning and Legal: To show the measurements of the area and the allowed area for the installation, zoning of areas and any legal requirements if applicable. IV.Natural and Man Made Physical Features: To illustrate the vegetation, landscape, soil, typography, site characters, elements, texture, materials and feature around the site. V.Circulation: To illustrate through diagrams the accessibility, permeability, pedestrian pathway, fire escape, services etc of the site and surroundings. VI.Utilities: To indicate any services & utilities within the selected site. VII.Sensory Perception: To illustrate human behaviour research and observation of sound, smell, air and visual qualities etc. VIII.Human, Culture and Activities: To illustrate the human, culture, issues, activities etc. IX.Climate: To illustrate micro climate such as sun path, wind, shade etc through diagrams and plans of the site. X.SWOT Analysis: To describe the Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats of the site in relation to the Final Project final outcome. XI.Special observation that the group would like to present that helps with the Final Project design.

I was also able to demonstrate good observational skills in terms of documenting data. This assignment helped me to become more observant and detailed when recording measurements. When drawing the site, I was able to understand it even more.

Final Project Part B: Design Process and Proposal.

Final Project Part B requires us on development of ideas through sketches, diagrams and working models. I.We were also assigned to present a Case Study & Idea Proposal individually, each student had to produce two or more “case study” related to the Final Project requirements to make a toy display box for the miniature toy.

After undergoing this assignment, I was able to apply the basic elements and principles of design as well as to use drawing as a language to visualize and communicate ideas. I was able to gain more knowledge about my toy (Iron Man)  and use that information to create a display box.

Final Project Part C: The Toy Display Presentation.

For our final project, we were required to undergo a design process to aid us in presenting our idea for the wall installation. The project was divided into three parts: Part A, Part B and Part C. In Part A, we were required analyze the given site, which is located in Taylor’s University Lake side campus, Block E Level 1, Lift Lobby. In part B, we were to document our design ideas and the process of obtaining our design and finally in Part C we were required to produce a presentation board on 2-3 A2 media of our choice containing; I.Some brief information about the site and suitable site analysis information. II.One plan of the entrance wall with the proposed display. III.The elevation(s) of the entranced wall. IV.One section through the entrance wall cutting through the display box and the wall. V.One plan of display box. VI.One top view of display box. VII.Front, side and back elevation of display box. VIII.One section of the display box. IX.One sketched perspective of the display on site or just the display box. X.Design introduction, intention/concept and design process. XI.Some brief information about the site and suitable site analysis information. XII.A model (1:1) – maximum 300x300x300mm. XIII.Photo montage of the display box/casing on site.

Reflection

The learning outcomes intended for this project were to demonstrate observational skills and be able to record, organize, interpret and describe a variety of issues through visual communication effectively as well as to manipulate a variety of media and techniques to visualize ideas leading to a finished product. The objectives of this project were to enable us to demonstrate good observation and visualization skills in a variety of ways depending on the area of specialization being pursued with an emphasis on the process of drawing.
Through this assignment, I was able to express my creativity in a variety of methods on a variety of medias such as cartridge paper, butter paper and etc. constructing a scaled model of the toy display box allowed me to further test my craftsmanship skills, I was able to understand my idea and design even more. In the end, all the intended learning outcomes and objectives were achieved.
